چکیده

Synthetic disk request traces are convenient and popular workloads for performance evaluation of storage subsystem designs and implementations. This paper develops an approach for validating synthetic disk request generators. Using this approach, commonly-used simplifying assumptions about workload characteristics (e.g., uniformly-distributed starting addresses and Poisson arrivals) are shown to be inappropriate, often leading to inaccurate performance predictions. Also, workload characteristics that require additional study are identi ed.

Synthesizing Representative I/O Workloads Using Iterative Distillation

Storage systems designers are still searching for better methods of obtaining representative I/O workloads to drive studies of I/O systems. Traces of production workloads are very accurate, but inflexible and difficult to obtain. (Privacy and performance concerns discourage most system administrators from collecting such traces and making them available to the public.) The use of synthetic work...

Towards a benchmark for Semantic Web reasoners - an analysis of the DAML ontology library

Benchmarks are one important aspect of performance evaluation. This paper concentrates on the development of a representative benchmark for Semantic Web-type ontologies. To this extent we perform a statistical analysis of available Semantic Web ontologies, in our case the DAML ontology library, and derive parameters that can be used for the generation of synthetic ontologies. These synthetic on...

SWSL: A Synthetic Workload Specification Language for Real-Time Systems

In this paper we discuss the issues which must be addressed in the speciication and generation of synthetic workloads for distributed real-time systems. We describe a synthetic workload speciication language (SWSL) which deenes a workload in a form that can be compiled by a synthetic workload generator (SWG) to produce an executable synthetic workload. The synthetic workload is then downloaded ...

Using Synthetic Players to Generate Workloads for Networked Multiplayer Games

The increase in popularity of online games in recent years has motivated research and development efforts into the creation of new algorithms, architectures, and protocols for these games. Generating suitable workloads to permit live empirical testing and experimentation to verify and validate this work, however, is a difficult process, especially if one is working towards massively multiplayer...
